Toba Lake
Guys, an interesting destination to visit is Toba Lake, which lies in the northern part of Barisan Mountain Range at North Sumatera. To reach this place we need 2 hours by plane from Jakarta to Medan then from Medan to Toba takes 5 hours by a car.
The Lake surrounded by precipitous cliffs 400-1,200 m high. Based on the topographic feature, is a Holocene volcano-tectonic and a biggest caldera in the world.
Geologically, it was formed by combination of tectonic structure and magmatic eruption processes in the pre-historical, Holocene. Ignimbrite series of the products surrounding the lake have shown many lithological ignmbrite cooling units, which is indicated that the series came out from several central vents with different ages.
The water surface of Toba is 905 m above sea level and about 1,100 km2 wide. The total area of the lake, including the areas of Samosir and Paradapur Islands, amounts to 1,780 km2.
The mountains around the lake are called Batak Highlands. The only draining river from Toba, the Asahan, flows southeastwards dissecting the gentle slopes of the pyroclastic plateau.
